Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) said he was proud to attend the opening ceremony of the historic national dialogue.
He said the conference, which drew 4,000 participants, showed that Ethiopia had received "a pen and a writing pad" to write its own new history.
He said a crucial breakthrough has been reached in Ethiopian politics to break the culture of conflict and force and replace it through dialogue and peace.
He thanked the National Dialogue Commission for its contribution to the process.
He said negotiations would bring great benefits for Ethiopia.
Through the talks, peace, forgiveness and coexistence can be spread and the country can be protected from foreign interference, he said.
He called on the participants to achieve results that are good for Ethiopia and lessons for Africa.
